Just call me Ceilidh

Whether you’ve been inspired by the latest series of Strictly or just love any opportunity to flail about in an attempt to look like you know what you’re doing, then this is the event for you!

As you ascend The Bedford stairs, you’ll find a large dance-hall style room adorned with fairy lights, tartan bunting and a corner full of weird and wonderful instruments for the band. Don’t worry, there’s also a bar in the room, so you won’t need to keep running downstairs for a top up.

The evening takes the format of two dances, a short break, two dances a short break and repeat. Before each dance, the team will explain the steps (and give demonstrations for the more tricky moves) and give you a chance for a couple of practice runs before the music starts and you try it for real.

You’ll always need a partner, but most of the dances require four pairs, so it’s a great way to meet new people (but beware, you will get up close and personal with most of them).

One word of warning, after stripping the willow and dancing the Gay Gordon to your heart’s content, it can get rather hot and sweaty, so make sure you’re prepared. I’d suggest always having a bottle of water to hand, wearing something light and airy and taking with you people you don’t mind looking a hot mess in front of.

All in all, i don’t think i’ve ever laughed so hard or danced off so many calories in one evening. Needless to say, i will definitely be ceilidh-ing again in the very near future.

Ceilidh nights
Once a month at The Beford Balham (first Friday) and once a month at the Peckham Liberal Club.
